The template will not save
Where“Edit template”
When “Save” in “Edit template” only produces red text, the message itself names the cause. Read it first, then apply the matching fix below.
Check first
- Whether the field list already holds 20 fields.
- Whether a “Field name” is left empty.
- Whether another manager has the same template open.
- Whether you have a signal.
- Whether you are signed in as an admin or a manager.
How to fix
Step 1: Read the message
Caution: Deleting a field stops it appearing on new reports. Content already submitted stays.
- “The template has reached the limit of 20 fields” — Cause: 20 fields used. Fix: delete an unused field first.
- “Your organization has reached the limit of 50 templates” — Cause: 50 templates exist. Fix: reuse an existing one.
- “Keep at least one required field” — Cause: the change leaves none required. Fix: turn on “Required to submit” elsewhere first.
- “The field type can't be changed” — Cause: you changed a saved field's type. Fix: add a new field, remove the old one.
- “The calculation is circular (calculations can't reference each other)” — Cause: two calculations point at each other. Fix: point one at a “Numbers” field.
- “A referenced field can't be found. Please re-select the fields to reference” — Cause: the source field is gone. Fix: re-pick it under “Calculation”.
- “Could not save. Check your connection and try again” — Cause: no connection. Fix: select “Save” again where you have a signal.
- “You don't have permission to edit the template” — Cause: your role is member, or the trial ended. Fix: ask for a role change, or check “Plan & billing”.
Step 2: Do not edit at the same time
When “Another manager saved changes first. Please reload” appears, the saved version wins. Select “Reload” beside the red text and redo your change.
Step 3: Roll back from the change history
Select “Restore this point” in “Change history” at the bottom, then “Restore”. The layout before that change returns and past reports are untouched.
